Looking for truly grass-fed beef in North Texas? Here's what to look for, what questions to ask, and where to find the real thing — including a ranch in Whitesboro, TX that ships nationwide.

If you've been searching for grass-fed beef in North Texas — Cooke County, Grayson County, Denton County, or anywhere in the DFW area — you already know the frustration. The grocery store labels say "grass-fed" but the fine print tells a different story. Farmers markets are hit or miss. And most people don't know a single rancher personally.
We started Lone Star Pastures in 2019 because we wanted to solve that problem — for our own family first, and then for anyone else who cared enough to ask the right questions.
The USDA's "grass-fed" label only requires that an animal was fed grass at some point. It says nothing about:
True grass-fed and grass-finished beef comes from cattle that ate only grass and forage their entire lives — from birth to harvest. That's a meaningfully different product, and it's what we raise.
Whether you're buying from us, a farmers market vendor, or another local ranch, here are the questions that matter:
1. Is the beef grass-fed AND grass-finished? Grass-fed but grain-finished is still feedlot beef at the end. Ask specifically about finishing.
2. Were hormones or growth promotants ever used? Many "natural" beef programs still allow hormone implants. Ask directly: "Were any hormones or growth promotants ever administered to these animals?"
3. Were antibiotics used? Routine antibiotic use is common even in herds marketed as "natural." Ask whether antibiotics were used preventively or only therapeutically.
4. What do the cattle eat besides grass? Some ranches supplement with grain, corn, or soy — especially in winter. Ask what the supplemental feed is and whether it's non-GMO.
5. Can I visit the ranch? A rancher with nothing to hide will say yes. We welcome visitors at 710 CR 168, Whitesboro, TX.
Farmers Markets The Denton Community Market, Frisco Fresh Market, and several DFW-area markets carry local beef vendors. Quality varies widely — use the questions above.
Local Ranches Several ranches in Cooke County, Grayson County, Montague County, and Wise County raise beef and sell direct. Ask your county extension office for a list of direct-marketing farms.
Online, Ranch-Direct This is increasingly the best option. A ranch that ships directly to your door can offer better transparency than a farmers market booth, because you can call them, visit their website, and read their full farming practices before you buy.
We're located at 710 CR 168 in Whitesboro, TX — about an hour north of Dallas in Cooke County, near the Grayson County line. Our Highland cattle are raised 100% grass-fed and grass-finished on open pasture. No hormones, no vaccines, no antibiotics, no pesticides, no herbicides — ever. Our supplemental feed (used only in winter) is non-GMO, soy-free, and corn-free organic milo and sorghum.
We sell ranch-direct, which means you're buying directly from the people who raised your food — not from a distributor, broker, or grocery chain.
